The Prudent Pet team is obviously made up of dedicated pet lovers, but we’re also a group of movie buffs too! Needless to say, when our passions collide and our furry friends appear on the silver screen, we get very excited.
We already paid homage to our favorite movies about dogs, so we decided it was time the felines got the spotlight. Here are the top 10 movies about cats:
10. 101 Dalmatians (1961)
Disney’s 101 Dalmatians is mostly about dogs (in case the name didn’t already give it away) but there is one cat in the film that sticks out amongst the black and white canine crew. The feline character, Sergeant Tibbs, is a hero in the film for assisting dalmatians Pongo and Perdita in rescuing their puppies. Whoever said cats and dogs can’t get along?
9. Babe
The 1995 film Babe is a great flick for lovers of all kinds of animals. The story is about a small pig named Babe who finds himself under the care of a dog at a farm. Babe learns to herd sheep and encounters many different farm animals while adjusting to life on Farmer Hoggett’s land. Among the animals, Babe meets is a grey Persian cat named Duchess, who belongs to the farmer’s wife Esme. Duchess is a bit spoiled and is positioned as an antagonist of the story (but we know that not all cats are evil!).
8. Garfield: The Movie
Jim Davis’ beloved orange tabby cat Garfield has been interpreted in many ways – from comics to animation, and finally brought to life in 2004 when Garfield hit the big screen. True to character, Garfield portrays the famous cat we all know and love as lazy, staunchly against Mondays, and obsessed with lasagna. Though the film wasn’t exactly favored by critics, it did have a star-studded cast including Bill Murray, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Alan Cumming, Brad Garrett, Jimmy Kimmel, and Debra Messing.
7. Hocus Pocus
Hocus Pocus may be the Prudent Pet team’s favorite Halloween film of all time. At the center of the story is Thackery Binx, a teenaged boy who is turned into an immortal black cat by the Sanderson Sisters. Hocus Pocus is a spooky flick and a great watch for witches and cat lovers alike – and not just around Halloween time.
6. Austin Powers
Among the myriad of silly characters in the James Bond parody series Austin Powers, there’s one that is truly unforgettable. Mr. Bigglesworth is a wicked Persian white cat who belongs to Dr. Evil, Austin Powers’ nemesis. The cat’s anger is often taken out via Dr. Evil onto unsuspecting victims. After being in a cryonic capsule with Dr. Evil, Mr. Bigglesworth loses his fur and is portrayed as a Sphynx cat for the rest of the films.
5. Cat in the Hat
One of Dr. Seuss’ best-known books, The Cat in the Hat, was originally published in 1957 but it took until 2003 for it to make its Hollywood debut. The film features everyone’s favorite anthropomorphic cat and mostly follows the original plot, but with expanded storylines and new characters. Like Garfield, The Cat in the Hat was judged harshly for veering away from Dr. Seuss’ original work. Regardless of what loyal Dr. Seuss fans think, The Cat in the Hat is a sing-songy, fun-filled adventure.
4. Keanu
While an R-rated film about two men who infiltrate a gang to save their stolen kitten might not sound cute and cuddly, Keanu is a great action-comedy about a tough, yet adorable, kitten. Starring comedians Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele (with a cameo by Keanu Reeves, as well), Keanu is a funny and exciting film from start to finish. But you might want to wait to watch it after the kids go to bed.
3. Puss in Boots
After audiences fell in love with the fugitive cat in Shrek 2 (2004), Puss in Boots ended up with his very own film. Puss in Boots received mostly positive reception by being a humorous and not-too-serious adventure with other fun storybook characters and plotlines. Plus, Puss in Boot’s signature wide-eyed kitten stare is reason enough to watch this film.
2. Alice in Wonderland
The animated adaption of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland is one of Disney’s most classic productions. During Alice’s journey through the rabbit hole, the audience meets many fantastic characters. But one of our favorites in the story is the Cheshire Cat. Often misdirecting Alice and letting his body fade in and out of view, the mischievous animal is the perfect animated representation of the sneaky housecats we all adore.
1. The Aristocats
It’s no surprise that Disney is behind our number one favorite cat movie The Aristocats Released in 1970, The Aristocats tells the story of a family of aristocratic cats (get it?) and the alley cat who comes to their aid after a butler kidnaps them in order to take over their impending fortune. The film is also full of great music, including the popular hit “Ev’vrybody Wants to Be a Cat”.
